Wellness and Lifestyle
There are many illnesses which stem directly from our own lifestyle risks. Modifying these risks represents an opportunity to improve our individual health. The greatest of these includes smoking, over eating, being sedentary, inadequate sleep, and substance abuse. We will assess your personal risks, and offer counselling on risk reduction. We ask our patients to take an active role in their own health by being open to such change.
Obesity is rapidly becoming the number one health risk in America. It can lead to diabetes, hypertension, cardiac disease, and arthritis. Obesity reduces both life expectancy and quality of life. Dr. Curran can help you make an individualized plan for achieving your optimal weight.
Children bring a special joy to our office. Dr. Curran provides care to children of all ages, starting from birth. In the first year of life, children will need frequent visits for growth and development monitoring and vaccinations. Later in life, an annual visit will monitor age-appropriate growth and development.
For most women, it is not necessary to have a separate gynecologist. Dr. Curran is experienced at routine care for the well woman. This includes pap smears, birth control, menstrual problems, breast cancer screening, and infections. Dr. Curran does not deliver babies, but does provide newborn care.
Dr. Curran has been in practice for 15 years, and is highly experienced in management of chronic diseases. This includes diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease, thyroid disease, lung disease, asthma, and many others. Patients with chronic illnesses should expect regularly scheduled visits to monitor their condition. For your convenience, we offer in-house glucose, HbA1c, and INR, as well as other labs drawn on-site. EKG and spirometry are also performed in-house.
Dr. Curran is an athlete himself, and experienced in the care of athletes of all levels. Care of the athlete can include sports-participation exams, nutrition counselling, exercise counselling, and injury assessment.
In the office we offer physical exams, EKG, lung spirometry, skin biopsies and cryotherapy, vaccinations, casting and splinting, pap smears, and other common procedures. Labs drawn in the office are processed locally. For procedures that we do not offer, we refer patients to the excellent panel of specialists in Asheville.
Children and adults should have a physical exam annually by a licensed physician. A routine physical is one of your best tools to assess your current health and to prevent future illness. This will usually include a head-to-toe exam, a review of your health records, and a variety of screening tests. We will screen for risks such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Physical exams are also performed to certify fitness for a variety of activities. We regularly perform DOT exams, employment exams, camp and sports physicals, pre-operative exams, and Medicare Wellness visits.
Vaccinations are one of the most effective tools of disease prevention in modern medicine. Be sure you and your children take advantage of all appropriate vaccinations. We offer the full range of childhood vaccinations, as well as counseling on the benefits and risks of each. For adults, we offer most domestic vaccinations. Each October we hold a Flu-shot clinic, and offer the shot on a walk-in basis.
Cancer screening is generally addressed at your wellness visit or physical exam. The most important cancers to screen for include breast, cervical, testicular, colon, lung, and skin. There is no one test for all cancers, but an individualized screening plan will be based on your personal risks.
Skin cancer is one of the most curable of all cancers. Patients with a personal or family history of atypical moles should have a skin exam annually. It is not necessary to see a separate dermatologist for this care. We screen and treat skin cancers on request, or as part of your annual physical.
